On January 14, 1861, Bishop Alexandre Taché and Father Albert Lacombe stood atop the hill where the St Albert Mission was to be established.

It is on top of this hill that the original Chapel and the St Albert Parish stands today. You can read more on the history of the St Albert Parish here.

• In December, Father Lacombe "reported that thirty lots had been taken and ten houses had been built". [BRV 20]

A Social Studies story for Grade 2 - What was life like back then?

Father Albert Lacombe arrived in Lac Ste. Anne in 1853, but he quickly began to search for a more suitable land to settle permanently. He wanted a place with fertile soil for agriculture and a place closer to the Blackfoot camps so that he could minister to them. Father Lacombe considered much of the land near the North Saskatchewan River, but he continually returned to one particular area. The soil was good, and there was wooded land as well, useful for constructing buildings. It was also close to Fort Edmonton and a mission Father Lacombe had established there, St Joachim.

in January of 1861, Father Lacombe brought Bishop Taché to the proposed mission site. Bishop Taché gave his blessing to the mission, giving it the name St Albert.

Jubilee 1911 - On St Albert's 50th

• From Black Robe's Vision:
  There doesn't appear to have been a 50th anniversary of the founding of St Albert in 1911; instead, in the year 1909, the 60th anniversary of Father Lacombe's ordination and the 50th anniversary of Grey Nuns' arrival in Western Canada were celebrated. As well, in 1914, the 50th anniversary of Father Leduc's priesthood is celebrated, suggesting the community placed importance on the Catholic figures in St Albert. [BRV 332]
• The telephone switchboard was moved to the Mauchle household and was operated from there for almost 50 years. Jacob was the telephone agent, and his wife Anna was the telephone operator. [St Albert Gazette]

1911 - The Telephone

Since its arrival in 1885, the telephone has been moved to various places as new operators and agents took on the job of receiving and connecting calls. Finally, in 1911, the telephone switchboard was moved to the Mauchle household and operated from there for almost 50 years. Jacob was the telephone agent, and his wife Anna was the telephone operator.

Jubilee 1911 - Early Organisations in St Albert

Before 1911

1887	St Jean Baptiste Society The purpose of this organisation "included the revival of French Canadian partiotism and the mutual assistance of each other...encourage further immigration to Western Canada from Quebec and to expand the development of western resources." [BRV 150]
1894	St Albert Patrons of Industry More agressive than the Agricultural Society, this organisation went straight to the polititians to lobby for concessions such as tariff reductions. [BRV 151]
1896	St Albert Métis Association The Association was "formed to take action on a single political issue - the attainment of scrip for those Métis born between 1870 and 1885." [BRV 152]
1897	Edmonton Agricultural Society It was formed due to the concern for the "slow rate of agricultural immigration to the west and the lack of rail facilities in the region." The society's aim was to "bring pressure to bearon federal authorities to accelerate railway development and thus encourage more rapid and extensive settlement of the area." [BRV 151]
1906	Squadron D Squadron D was part of the 19th Regiment of St Albert Mounted Rifles and displayed remarkable skill as a military unit within the first few years of establishment. [BRV 336]
1907	Agricultural Society of St Albert At is beginning, the society organised the local fairs and exhibitions in 1907. As well, they held meetings with "topics of interest to farmers". [BRV 335]

After 1911

Chamber of Commerce The Chamber's aims were similar to that of the Board of Trade, and in their first organisational meeting, they decided upon their first aim - to establish a bank in town. [BRV 335]

1913

Athletic Association [BRV 336] Athletic Club The Club was "operated by Charles Joyal and housed in Joyal's Empress Theatre", where popular activities included boxing and fencing. [BRV 337] Club Nautique du St Albert [BRV 337] Edmonton Canoe Club Membership to this club was only $10 a year, and they "sold rapidly as Edmontonians sought to capitalize on the navigational opportunities of the Sturgeon River". The Club's Pavilion, which included tennis courts and quoit beds, also attracted membership. [BRV 337] Parley Français "...this group was part of a larger association devoted to the preservation of the French language and to the rallying of the interests of French-Canadians in western Canada." [BRV 336] Women's Institute The Institute sponsored a number of events including a concert and its first annual fair. It played an active role in St Albert.[BRV 335]

"Evidence of existence [of the Board was] apparent as early as 1908" and its aim was to "promote industrial and commercial potential of their town". Operations appeared to cease in 1912 as a new Chamber of Commerce emerged. [BRV 335]

Jubilee 1961 - On St Albert's 100th

• In collaboration with the Knights of Columbus, the St Albert Lions' Club organised a Soap Box Derby on St Vital Hill as part of the Centennial celebrations. [BRV 739]
• The Marguerite D'Youville Auxilliary held their first event, a Special Centennial Tea for the 100th anniversary celebrations, as a newly formed organisation. [BRV 740]

Jubilee 1961 - Present Organisations

Up to 1961

1931	St Albert Catholic Women's League [Historical Network] The League was established with "a strong emphasis on the spiritual needs of the members", and most of their activities involved helping out where needed in the community. [BRV 737]
1939	St Albert Community League [Historical Network] The League's decision to build a Community Hall brought the community together for the project. The men worked on the building while the women would serve drinks to them as well as fundraise for the construction. [BRV 737]
1946	St Albert Women's Institute [Historical Network] This Institute formed from the Red Cross group that worked during WWII. Members were very involved in the community, including a project for a library and numerous campaigns for various medical foundations. [BRV 737]
1951	St Albert Lions' Club [Historical Network] Fundraising allowed the Club to develop Lions' Park. They were also heavily involved, with the Knights of Columbus, in holding the Soap Box Derby that was part of St Albert's 100th anniversary. [BRV 739]
1956	Girl Guides of Canada in St Albert [Historical Network] The Girl Guides have been involved in numerous projects and volunteer extensively in the community. [BRV 738]
1958	St Albert Branch 271 Royal Canadian Legion [Historical Network] The Legion runs several activities, starting in 1959 with its first Soap box Derby, and in 1961, the Poppy Fund Essay Contest. [BRV 738]
1959	The Knights of Columbus - St Albert Council 4742 [Historical Network] The Knights of Columbus was a fraternity of Catholic men formed in 1882, and were committed to "assist fellow brother Knights in practising true charity, unity, and fraternity". Similarly, the St Albert chapter is involved in many activities that benefit the community. [BRV 739]
1961	The Marguerite D'Youville Auxilliary [Historical Network] The Youville Home became a Nursing Home in 1961 when the provincial government began to provide care for the elderly. Following was the formation of the Hospital Auxiliary. Members have been holding their traditional Annual Tea and Bazaar. [BRV 740]

After 1961

1962	Arts and Crafts Guild [Historical Network] The Guild registered under the Societies Act and among its aims was the chance to teach others a variety of arts and crafts, as well as to bring awareness and appreciation of arts and crafts in the community. [BRV 740] Balmoral Lodge AF & AM in St Albert [Historical Network] At its beginning, the Lodge met at the Lower Hall in St Albert United Church before moving to Braeside Presbyterian Church from 1978 to 1983. [BRV 740]
1969	The St Albert Breakfast Lions Club [Historical Network] The Club emphasised its activities for the "Senior Citizens, student development, and minor sports". To name a few commitments, they had had an active role in building the Senior Citizen Drop-In Centre, "supporting the minor sports, [and] sponsoring Scouts and Beavers". [BRV 741] Sturgeon General Hospital Auxiliary [Historical Network] The Auxiliary fundraises in order to provide hospital equipment and services for patients. It became affiliated with the Albert Hospital Auxiliary Association in 1984. [BRV 741]
1970	The Baha'is of St Albert [Historical Network] Dr and Mrs Glen Eyford brought the Baha'i Faith with them when they settled in St Albert. They opened their home to those who wanted to hear the message of Baha'u'lla and were also involved in the community. [BRV 742]
1972	St Albert Historical Society [Historical Network] The Historical Society was formed when the Father Lacombe Museum was to undergo renovation. It is committed to preserving the history of St Albert. [BRV 742]
1973	St Albert Progress Club [Historical Network] The St Albert Club is part of the Canadian Progress Club, whose aims include "improving the Canadian environment by coping with needs of the community and their uniting of all the people of Canada into a nation that stands as one of the great and prosperous peoples of the world". [BRV 743]
1978	St Albert Association for the Handicapped [Historical Network] The Association was formed in order to provide support and services to any handicap and their families. [BRV 742]
1983	Associated Canadian Travellers [Historical Network] The St Albert chapter is heavily invovled in fundraising for such organisations as the St Albert Association for the Handicapped, the Northern Alberta Crippled Children's Fund, and many others. [BRV 743] Cosmopolitan Club [Historical Network] The St Albert Cosmopolitan Club's aims are to "develop good citizenship and brotherhood through unity; to contribute to community welfare through service". They have supported many community projects. [BRV 742]

St Albert & District Chamber of Commerce

St Albert & District Chamber of Commerce
"The Chamber's objectives are to promote and improve St Albert trade and commerce and the economic, civic, and social welfare of the community". The Chamber is involved in many projects such as the Farmer's Market, and have many programs in motion to encourage the local small businesses. [BRV 741]

Prior to the Chamber of Commerce, a St Albert & District Board of Trade had been established in 1956.

An interesting fact is that in 1912, the St Albert Chamber of Commerce was formed. It is unclear as to whether or not that Chamber had since been replaced by the new Board of Trade, and ultimately the new Chamber of Commerce.

Jubilee 2011 - St Albert's 150th

The official website for St Albert's 150th anniversary celebration is Rendevous 2011.

In conjunction to the upcoming 150th anniversary of St Albert, FACTS has set up several projects this summer, funded by Canada Summer Jobs.

Firstly, with Centralta Tourist Society, FACTS is working on a blog related to “Founder’s Walk”, which will be unveiled as part of the 150th anniversary celebrations. The goal of this project is to invite the community to learn about the history of St Albert in an interactive way. As well, another project related to murals in Legal and Morinville is underway.

FACTS is also working on a project in continuing heritage in the community. We will be indexing 150 churches, schools, and local organisations, in addition to their individual histories to bring to light that these community operations play an integral part in St Albert’s establishment in the past, now, and into the future.

On August 20th, 2009, FACTS will also be hosting a Blogger Workshop and will emphasize on St Albert history as a part of education. For more information on the Blogger Workshop, please visit the Workshop blog.
